Amicus Candidate Spotlight

Bob Springmeyer
"I am running for Governor because I know that Utah can and must do better. This is a great state. But it must be an even greater state."
  • I am not satisfied that more than 400,000 people in Utah, including 135,000 children, have no health insurance and many more families are struggling to keep up with rising insurance costs.
  • I am not satisfied that one third of Salt Lake School District students and almost half of Ogden students, and far too many of our Hispanic students end up dropping out. Pretty great is just not good enough anymore!
  • I am not satisfied that Utah wages, as a percentage of national averages, have been falling steeply since the early 1980's under Republican Administrations - 80 percent of Utah workers have suffered real wage losses since 1979.
  • I am not satisfied that when my 87 year old mother tries to call State Government she can't get a real human - just a complicated stream of clicks, beeps and frustration.
  • Middle class families are been squeezed by higher health care, energy and tuition costs. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that we cannot wait to act - We Must Do Better.

Utah Republican leaders are a disgrace to Capitalism

SALT LAKE CITY - Bob Springmeyer, the good jobs, good education, good health, good government candidate for Utah governor, today called Utah Republican leaders a “disgrace to capitalism.” Springmeyer an economist and management consultant drew attention to a crisis caused by “wrongheaded energy and farm policies” supported by Utah Republican leaders.
  • In the last year, the price of corn has risen 70 percent; wheat 55 percent; rice 160 percent.
  • The second largest employer in Sanpete County is to suspend operations because of high feed prices and as many as 675 layoffs will occur.
Instead of accepting their full share of responsibility, Hatch, Bishop and Governor Huntsman are just making it worse by supporting the tangle of subsidies, mandates and tariffs to encourage the production of biofuels. According to the World Bank, almost all of the growth in global corn production from 2004 to 2007 was devoted to American ethanol production — pushing up corn and animal feed prices and prompting farmers to switch from other crops to corn.

In response to the Moroni Feed announcement to suspend operations because of high feed costs, Huntsman just offered subsidized loans and more “corporate hand-outs” - wrongheaded actions which will create more market disruptions and unintended consequences.

Granted, some of the rising cost of food, energy and fertilizer are out of governments’ control, including flooding in the mid-west, droughts in California, and higher consumption in China and India, but the real problem is using food for fuel - fuel that is 70% used for individual transportation.

So far there is no sign that Huntsman and other Utah Republican leaders are ready to step up and do what is needed. They have refused to curtail bio-fuel subsidies, lavish farm subsidies or corporate giveaways.

Springmeyer pledges thorough review of Government

Bob Springmeyer, the good jobs, good education, good health, good government candidate for Utah governor, pledged today to scour every state office and program for cost cuts and efficiencies.

"Utah is feeling the pinch of the economic downturn affecting other states in the country," said Springmeyer, citing recent figures that show a decline in the growth of Utah jobs for the tenth month in a row. Even without a doubling of gas prices in the past year we are overdue in evaluating twenty four years of legislative leadership that refuses to listen to and be responsive to Utahns.

"We cannot wait any longer. It's time to step up and conduct a thorough review of every agency in state government, who we serve and how we serve - top to bottom, inside and out." "I want to know what works, and what doesn't.

Four dollar gas means we can't do business the old ways any longer," said Springmeyer. Bob also suggested that we may need to look at some state employees working four days per week to reduce the environmental and cost impacts of commuting. "In no way can this reduce the availability and responsiveness of state services" said Springmeyer.

Springmeyer is proposing to appoint a Performance Review Commission of private-sector executives, elected officials and senior-level state employees to conduct a thorough review of every agency in state government. Governor Cal Rampton set up his, "Little Hoover" Commission as a public/private partnership to evaluate state government - "It is time we have a state government that listens to and is responsive to all Utahns," said Springmeyer.

Springmeyer has operated his own management consulting business for 30 years. The company, Bonneville Research, specializes in strategic planning and economic development. Springmeyer was born in Provo and raised in Ogden and Sugarhouse. He attended the University of Utah where he earned degrees in economics and political science.

Keynote Speaker - Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer

On November 2, 2004 Brian was elected as Montana's first Democratic governor since 1988. Brian Schweitzer became the 23rd Governor of the great state of Montana on January 3, 2005.

Some of Governor Schweitzer Initiatives include:

Insure Montana: A Health Insurance Program for Small Businesses - Governor Schweitzer called for and signed into law a program creating a purchasing pool allowing small businesses to band together to negotiate and purchase affordable health insurance for their employees.

20 x 10: Energy efficiency in state government - A twenty percent reduction in facility energy requirements by executive branch agencies, by the end of 2010. Reductions will be sought in electricity, natural gas, propane and fuel oil use.

Making synthetic petroleum out of coal, while capturing and sequestering greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide - The proposal has received national attention. It was featured in the NY Times, Washington Post and LA Times, and he has been a repeat guest CNBC's Kudlow and Company and CNN's Lou Dobbs. His national energy ideas were the subject of a feature-length story by Leslie Stahl on CBS's 60 Minutes in 2006.

Incentives for bio-fuel and wind-energy production; an historic increase in public education spending along with a balanced budget and no new taxes; and stronger protection of public lands for hunting, fishing and camping.

John Bohlinger, a Republican, small business owner, and former member of both the Montana House and Senate was picked by Schweitzer as his Lt. Governor.

“We must do better” protecting Utah, says Democratic candidate for governor

SALT LAKE CITY – As week long activities to commemorate Earth Day 2008 begin, the Democratic candidate for governor says “we must do better” at keeping Utah’s air and water safe for ourselves and our children.

Bob Springmeyer, a business-development consultant and long-time civic leader, today challenged incumbent Jon Huntsman Jr. to join other Democrats – including 2nd District Congressman Jim Matheson – in fighting to keep even low-level radioactive waste generated overseas out of Utah.

“After watching as a generation of fellow Utahns suffers the downwind effects of nuclear experimentation, the governor’s lack of leadership in stopping the EnergySolutions plan is nothing if not remarkable,” said Springmeyer. “The governor’s ‘Life Elevated’ market-tested slogan rings hallow if it includes radioactive waste 80 miles west of where I stand right now.”

Springmeyer said that as governor he would use the full power of his office to stop the politically powerful Salt Lake City-based company. “I join Congressman Matheson who has said for a long time that Utah should not be the world’s dumping ground for nuclear waste.”

Springmeyer mentioned that under the federal Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act, states are responsible for regulating access to low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities. And in March, the Utah Radiation Control Board adopted a resolution urging federal regulators to deny the EnergySolutions application.

“It’s clearly a state function that the governor apparently wants to sidestep for purely political reasons,” said Springmeyer.

According to The Associated Press, EnergySolutions’ political action committee, executives and investors poured nearly $400,000 into congressional campaigns since 2005, up from about $40,000 in the four previous years, Federal Election Commission reports show.

EnergySolutions increased lobbyist spending from $680,000 in 2006 to more than $1 million last year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group.

In addition, the company has poured tens of thousands into community-based public relations projects, including purchase of naming rights for the former Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

Gov. Huntsman has indicated his political ambitions extend beyond Utah, and he has been mentioned as a possible choice for vice president or other high-ranking official in a John McCain presidential administration.

Springmeyer said the governor’s dodge fits a pattern typified by a philosophy of governance by task force and a reluctance to challenge prominent members of his Utah Republican Party. “The governor and his Legislature seem to excel in governance by task force – on mine safety, on health care reform, on identifying renewable energy sources. But all too often ‘blue-ribbon’ panels merely forecast the death of good ideas. Real policy at the Capitol is decided behind closed doors … with the governor often missing in action.”

Springmeyer listed numerous issues in which the governor has preferred to stay in the background: Magna homeowners endangered because of negligent state oversight at Kennecott’s tailings pond, a possible nuclear power plant sited on the Green River that would require an enormous amount of water siphoned from the Colorado River watershed, uranium mining and its impact on miners’ health in the Four Corners area, reclamation of new and old mines across Utah, and the burning of uranium-contaminated waste in Layton.

“People often ask me why I would take on our popular governor,” Springmeyer said. “Well, I say, ‘Gov. Huntsman is a fine man from a family I admire greatly, but through several generations my family has witnessed the tragic consequences of failing to protect our air, our water, our jobs, and our schools.’

“I just say, ‘We must do better.’ ”

SPRING TIMES: A message from Bob Springmeyer, Democratic Candidate for Governor

SPRING TIMES

Dear fellow Utahn,

This is a great time to be a Democrat!

Change is coming to the U.S. and Utah, and not a moment too soon.

But let me get straight to the point: I'm running for governor of Utah. I'm running to win, and to win this race I need your help.

Republican leaders have failed Utah time and time again on:
  • Health care
  • Jobs
  • Education
They've squandered opportunities to move our great state forward, instead focusing on a narrow, ideological and extreme agenda that has done nothing to improve the lives of average Utahns.

We Must Do Better!

Too many Utahns simply cannot make ends meet. They cannot find a job that pays enough to support a family, or they live in fear of losing the job they have.

We desperately need new leadership! Leadership that will focus on Utah and not ambitions to higher office. Leadership that will reverse the fall in real wages. Leadership that will bring jobs to the state that can support a family.

I can be that kind of leader, but first I am going to have to get elected and for that I need your help.

We Must Do Better!

Our opponent will have the full support of his family's billions.

I'm confident we can win this race, but I'm not taking anything for granted and I'm counting on you.

Please share my thoughts and my candidacy announcement with your friends and neighbors at your caucus meeting tonight.

Thanks,

Bob Springmeyer
Democratic Candidate for Governor
