Salt Lake City – MSNBC commentator Lawrence O’Donnell joined The Southern Baptist Convention’s Richard Land, The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, The Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody, and the Santorum Campaign’s former honorary Florida Chairman O’Neal Dozier in repeating bigoted claims about Governor Mitt Romney’s LDS faith. The Utah State Democratic Party reaffirms, once again, President Obama’s principled stance that religion is off the table, and calls on Lawrence O’Donnell and all others who would use religion as a partisan wedge in this presidential campaign to immediately cease, apologize to LDS faithful across the world, and assume a more civil tone.
Utah State Democratic Party Chair Jim Debakis said, “Unfortunately, Mr. O’Donnell has a long history of Mormon-bashing. I won’t stand for it, and I know the President doesn’t stand for this type of disrespect and incivility either. It is terrible that pundits and political opportunists on both sides of the aisle keep forcing this issue into our national debate. I have the utmost respect for my LDS brothers and sisters, and I strongly condemn these uncivil, prejudiced attacks on the faith. We are better than this, and our discourse should reflect it.”

When religion is such a focal point on a candidates viability in the political arena, it seems to me that examination of religious beliefs is a valid exercise in evaluation of candidates. O'Donnell may have stated some inaccuracies, but many facts stated in the program are consistent with recorded history, and while they may conflict with "official" church history, I think demonizing O'Donnell for examining the LDS faith critically is unnecessary. Correct O'Donnell for inaccuracy if you wish, call him out for it even, but critical examination of faith is going to happen, and it won't always be accepting.
