Airport TRAX Extension Line Soon to Be a Reality Mayor Ralph Becker to Sign Interlocal Agreement with UTA at Central Station Plaza Tomorrow

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker will sign an agreement tomorrow between Salt Lake City and the Utah Transit Authority that initiates the design and construction of the Airport TRAX Extension between downtown and the Salt Lake City International Airport. The signing will take place at 11:00 at the Salt Lake Central Station Plaza, 600 West 250 South.

The interlocal agreement calls for UTA to build the TRAX extension in exchange for Salt Lake City granting to UTA the use of City streets and property. The agreement also calls for the City to pay UTA up to $35 million for the project.

Mayor Becker and representatives from Salt Lake City and UTA will be available to answer questions.

Though I am quite happy about this, it still amazes me that it took so long for an airport line to be funded. It is only common sense that you want your cities core to be connected to its ports.

Though I'm not a huge fan of spending billions of dollars of public money on mass transit, at least this TRAX line will serve a useful purpose by helping people get to/from the airport. It'll be nice to have that line.
