Ass u me

Today the Utah House of Representatives passed a bill that would repeal driver privilege cards for undocumented workers. After a 45 minute debate HB 239 passed with 39 yeas and 35 nays. Shortly after the vote closed Speaker Pro Tem Steve Urquhart announced that House Speaker Greg Curtis would cast his vote with “leave of the body.” Representative Urquhart stated “Speaker closes the votes…. with leave of the body, speaker Curtis votes no on 239. 39 yes votes, 35 no votes.”

Representative Ron Bigelow then stood up, asking for a point of order. Here is the conversation that followed:

Bigelow: “You said that it passed 39 votes, if the speaker voted I believe that’s 40?”

Urquhart: “He voted no.”

Bigelow: “Oh, I’m sorry.”
