Tax and Spend Iron County (GOP) Commissioners

Today's Spectrum reports that Iron County overspent its annual budget by 1.2 million dollars. But the best part? When the Iron County Commissioners received the news, they sat silent and in shock. They weren't expecting such news... they had no idea the county had overspent so much.

Commissioner Lois Bulloch (R): "This is the fifth audit I've ever sat through and this one's the worst I've ever seen."

Hmmm. What happened, Commissioner? Some blame it on a growing community. Others say the new auditor didn't do the books right and it will all be resolved. I say hogwash.

Election after election we hear Republicans campaign on fiscal responsibility. If the Iron County Commission doesn't even know how much money each department is spending, how can they possibly claim to be fiscally responsible? It is their *responsibility* to KNOW exactly what is going on in county government, I'd say down to the last penny. It is their responsibility to make sure our tax dollars are spent wisely. There are now rumors of a tax increase -- I hope that is not true. A tax increase is the *last* thing Iron county citizens need, especially when our wages are so low and our housing prices are so high. I do hope the Iron County Commission can figure out what went wrong and how they are going to prevent it from happening in the future.

And so.... I don't *ever* want to hear Iron County residents complain about "tax and spend liberals" *ever* again. Iron County hasn't had a democratic county commissioner in I don't know how many decades. The current state of affairs was brought on by an overwhelmingly GOP county government.

When electeds become complacent, when they quit being responsible, when they let things go unchecked... well, that is when they are no longer responsible to their constituents, the tax paying citizens. We deserve better.

This isn’t the problem of Iron County Republican’s – who, by the way do a great job.

It’s the free spending bureaucrats and educrats who think that your tax money is theirs to spend.

Ya you keep on thinking that.

Republicans are in control right?

O I guess not.

Somehow it's the democrats fault

Government is rule of Law, Education, Economic Development.

Its bad, Its evil.

The capacity for Republicans to hold two diametrically opposed concepts in their minds is positively astounding. They would make excellent Orwellian doublethinkers.

um, anonymous (6:54am)

Did you not get the point of the post? The Iron County commission had no idea the departments in COUNTY GOVERNMENT had overspent by 1.2 million bucks. How are they doing a "great job" if they don't even know what is going on?

Come on, quit throwing words out like bureaucrats and educrats. Those are words to just deflate the issue and put it off on someone else.

The buck has to stop somewhere.

Someone has to look hard at what is going on and do something about it.

Oh, and by the way... the bureaucrats and educrats you refer to... in Iron County, they are overwhelmingly REPUBILCAN!!!

Republicans complain about how bad government is.
Then after they are elected, they prove it.

Sometimes for Republicans, limited government means limited internal controls and limited oversight. However, I've known some democrats to be guilty of this as well. The only difference, is that they generally don't try to equate conservatism with fiscal responsibility. Republicans do, but Democrats know better.

Emily,
great post.
We have the same situation in Davis County. Everyone complains about taxes here, but everytime they elect or re-elect the same people with the same tax problems. When people talk about the "tax and spend" librals, Democrats have to be reminded that Davis County is run by Republicans. The irony here is that in past 20 years, we have had one Democrat elected to County Commission. He voted against a tax increase and every Republican Commissioner has voted for a tax increase.
By the way, I'm tired of conservatives in this state calling Democrats "whiners" every time we speak out. The more this state tolerates one-party government, the more problems we will have with taxes and government services that protect the people.

a little typo in my last comment:
I meant to say that conservatives have to be reminded that Republicans run Davis County.
