We have a failing public school system which continues to suck down more and more money while delivering less in terms of well educated graduates.
We continue to fall behind the rest of the world in both the quality of our educational output and the quantity.
Tanya Clay House of the ultra-liberal People for the American Way recently declared, "We've never seen a shred of credible evidence that shows school vouchers actually help students learn. While all public schools must demonstrate success under No Child Left Behind, private schools are not held to the same level of accountability for their performance."
But lets ask the question another way, speaking of those same shreds of evidence, we've not seen many that point to those now in charge of that public school system having the ability to turn that around. In fact, there seems to be more evidence than not that they're incapable of doing so.
So the question becomes how competition could be any worse than monopoly? How could allowing the consumer of the education product to choose that which they find to best fill their own childrens needs be any worse than the arbitrary standards and needs of the monopoly?
From the side of the political spectrum which claims to be for "choice" this should be an issue for which they are fighting for the choice vouchers bring, not against.
"And Democrats have found the approach convenient, allowing them to produce a final bill that is strongly to their liking without a lot of messy public meetings. “Democrats intended to do it differently, but once the partisan wars began they said we might as well play it this way,” said Mr. Mann, the Brookings scholar."
I'm impressed by this do nothing Congress which continues the tradition of special interest and avoiding public meetings.
How about that new Democratic Congress--way to go!!
When someone can prove to me that public education in utah is failing then I will concede to everything you say and eat my left foot.
If that is your argument - that it is "failing" ... and that is the final hurrah on which you are hanging your hat... then I give in.
And when somebody out there can prove to me that somehow liberal democrats have DONE this thing (failing education) to children in the state of Utah, well, then I will follow you all the way to the voting booth.
But the truth is, education in utah is *not* failing. Teachers and school districts do a remarkable job with few resources. And the few resources problem is not because of the Utah Democrats.
So keep blaming the liberals for this so-called state of affairs. But I don't think it is going to get you very far, at least not in Utah. Cause if the Democrats have *that* much power then I have been been paying attention to the wrong parts of the legislative sessions.
Interesting comment by Anon. I thought the "do nothing" congress was when the Repubs were in control. But I do remember they were the "never there" Republican Congress. That's because they only worked 2 1/2 days a week.
