Immigration

This afternoon Sean Hannity said that immigration was the number one issue for conservatives in America.

As I listened to Hannity and his listeners go on and on about securing the boarders I thought, "what are the daily problems I face because of illegal immigration?"

Hmmmm.

I then thought, "what does affect my family on a daily basis?"

My first thought was, "unaffordable healthcare."

Sometimes in life we have to sacrifice, and that's okay because I understand that my personal sacrifice allows me the opportunity to make sure that my wife and kids are insured.

I really began to understand how much my sacrifice was worth over the last two weeks while I have been trying to fight off pneumonia, but no worries; at least I know that my sacrifice might even go beyond aiding my own family. Since I'm not insured and cannot make a claim, IHC has more money for their corporate officers to purchase their second and third homes. Knowing this helps to get me through my illness and the stress caused by the realization that I might have even more severe undiscovered health issues.

High gas prices have also been problematic for our young, middle-class family, but we cut back where we can and make due, and we feel good about it, because we know that our soldiers in Iraq are making even a bigger sacrifice as the fight and die for our freedom while oil corporations and Halliburton announce record profits.

In fact, our family is planning to cut back even more because I heard on the Doug Wright Show that the state tax on gas needs to be raised because the state is losing money because of people like me who are cutting back on buying gas.

With all that thinking I started to get a headache, but even with the pounding in my head I was able to think this one last one last thought,

"Damn those illegals anyway!"

So Hannity thinks that immigration is the number one problem. I'm interested in knowing why conservatives have made immigration an issue for the past year or so. Was Hannity and conservatives concerned with immigration 5 or 10 years ago?
Immigration problems have around for more than 40 years, but only now people are worried about the "browns" taking over our country. If anyone can remember the 1980's, President Reagan cut the budget on the INS nearly in half. Apparently, conservatives were not too concerned about illegal immigration then. But now they are.

It's a rallying issue for the repubs. It's a tribalism thing that appeals to their voters and gets them to the polls -- they fear the "other": Muslims, gays, feminists, immigrants . . .
