Utah needs America

As Bob Aagard mentioned on his blog, The World, According To ME, I was on NIGHTSIDE last night where I fully endorsed Senator Orrin Hatch for his campaign to replace current US Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales.

When Michael Castner asked who I thought Governor Huntsman should appoint my immediate response was Utah Democratic Chairman, Wayne Holland Jr (after all, he is the chair).

Michael laughed and then asked who I really thought would be the Governor's choice. Ethan Millard suggested that Governor Huntsman should appoint himself (which isn't a bad idea at all), but in the 0.25 seconds I had to answer I mention that if it had to be a Republican that President John Valentine would be a good pick for the Republicans as I feel he is a true statesman.

Today JM Bell e-mailed me and lovingly scolded me by reminding me that President Valentine was the guy who killed all day Kindergarten because of a joke that Governor Huntsman made about the Utah legislature at a dinner in Washington DC. What I haven't shared with Jeff or anyone else until now is that I actually have a great candidate for that seat if President Valentine were to suddenly move on.

Unfortunately due to time restraints I was unable to give Michael my best recommendation. If Senator Hatch is nominated by President Bush I think that it would be in Utah's best interest to appoint Congressman Jim Matheson as our next senator. Jim is Utah's best congressman with the highest approval ratings from our federal delegation, and quite frankly, Utah needs America, especially now that both the House and Senate are under Democratic control.

I want to thank Michael Castner and Ethan Millard for taking my call last night; Bob Aagard for not losing that loving feeling (to understand you need to check out Bob's blog), and to Congressman Jim Matheson and Jeff Bell for inspiring this post.

With every best wish,

The Utah Amicus

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, hold on, ha, ha, ha, ha.

Besides the fact that Matheson is only popular because he doesn't do anything....has he ever actually sponsored a bill?...the Governor is a pretty stalwart Republican.

Although Hatch ain't going anywhere, unfortunately, it would be interesting to see what Huntsman would do with a Senate vacancy. Would he appoint himself, would he go with a established politico or a business type?

Of course since he was a democrat, not much came out of committee. That is changing now that he is in the majority.

Stop laughing and start researching. It's not hard with the internet.

You're right anon. Matheson makes sense!!

My apologies oh brother - I hope we get that bill that allows HUD to insure home equity conversion mortgages for a few more months. I'm glad he's spending his time on that issue while the Financial Services committee spends time raping the industrial bank statute that is a huge boon for Utah.

Isn't it true though, that Utah is one of the few states with laws requiring the Governor to appoint someone of the same party as the Senator who vacated a seat? I believe very few states have such a law, but Utah is one.
