This is not a UEA vs. Voucher Pro-Choice false dichotomy. Voucher Pro-choice has one objective: start privatizing public schools while subsidizing private schools for the rich. UEA has various objectives beyond defending the Pro-choice Voucher assault on public schools like increasing teacher pay and reducing class sizes.

Everyone has a duty to pay for public school--whether you have kids or not. To take money out of the system when you have kids is against one of the conerstones of a civilized society based on justice and equality.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, Christian. That's exactly how to sum it up.

Anonymous said...

I continue to look at these numbers on both sides - UEA and Vouchers - My head is still spinning and I can't see straight long enough to add them up.

It is clear.. we need to do something about campaign finance.

More money was spent by each of these PACs than is earned by a state employed manager with a master's degree. In some cases a single contribution to one candidate is more than the same manager earns in two months.

I think there is something grossly wrong with this picture. It's clear that lobbyists are running the show. I just think our priorities are all screwed up.

Anonymous said...

This is why I think vouchers suck. Vouchers are not for eveyone. They are for a small percentage of selfish people who could give a damn about anyone else's kids.

Anonymous said...

Had an argument today with a persom who is extremely devoted to privatization of education. She said vouchers are a good thing because then people can decide what they want to do with their own money instead of letting an inefficient government decide.

So, I say -- let vouchers take over. Go. Privatize education. See what happens when poor children are left out because they can't pay. Just watch. Go for it. I can't wait.

Anonymous said...

With the second anonymous--the person is dead wrong. Some people assume that THEY THEMSELVES pay for the cost of their kids and that the voucher would reduce that amount. The reality is that it is a SHARED COST. Thus, OTHERS would be funding the other person't PERSONAL choice with THEIR money. Where's the choice in that?

If the voucher fanactivists have THAT much money to spend on ads, candidates, and such, why do they need my money?

Anonymous said...

Maybe the first anonymous and other voucher supporters could give me some of their tax exemptions they get from having a child. AFter all, I don't have the choice they do in being able to have and raise a child. Since they want ME to pay for their personal choice or "lack" of it, I figure, they could assist me a little with my own.
