A Man You Can Trust

Dear Friends and Colleagues

As many of you know, I have announced my candidacy for the State Legislature, House District 58. This is not a step I take lightly. Although it will be hard to run against an incumbent, I am committed to spend whatever time is needed. I look forward to walking the neighborhoods, getting to know the people in our district, and listening to their concerns. With your help, we can bring about a needed change.

I believe I can better represent the people of this district. I’ve lived here nearly all my life. My wife, Cathy, and I have lived in the same home for 36 years. We raised 8 children here. I want the best for our homes and families, our neighborhoods and communities. I will vote for positions that serve the interests of the people in my district, not what furthers my political or personal ambitions.

I have a long history of service to this community as former superintendent of Alpine School District and principal of both American Fork High and Pleasant Grove Junior High. I taught math at Orem High for 10 years. I am a former LDS bishop and stake president. Currently, I am an associate professor of educational leadership at BYU where I direct a school-university partnership centered in the school of education.

As an active, involved citizen, I am aware that the issues voters really care about are not adequately addressed by many of our lawmakers. These include establishing long-term funding for public and higher education, supporting issues related to children, “boomers,” and senior citizens, providing health care and human services, meeting transportation needs, protecting our environment, preventing crime, providing affordable housing, and preserving our neighborhoods. Issues such as these are a high priority among Utahns in our district as well as across the state. I pledge to be an effective, moderate voice in the Utah Legislature—a voice that is needed more now than ever.

Here is where I need your help. A state house race requires a significant amount of money to communicate with voters. It also requires involvement by interested people. Please consider participating in my campaign. Please feel free to call, write, or email me. I would be happy to discuss any issues or concerns.

The time has come for a change. If elected, I will do my part to bring balance, bipartisanship, and common sense to the Utah legislature. Please join me in changing the future. Thank you for your support.

Meet Bennion Spencer, candidate for Utah's 3rd Congressional District

On March 17, 2008...
Bennion L. Spencer filed to run for Congress in Utah's 3rd District. He will be running on the Democratic ticket, and is very excited to have the opportunity to run for Congress. Bennion will be bringing some fresh, new ideas to the table. With a Master Degree in Political Science and International Relations, Bennion has a grasp of the issues facing our great country. He will support our next president in restoring peace in the world and making our country a more prosperous and better place to live . He is very passionate about the economy and also about immigration.

About Bennion...

Bennion Spencer grew up in Layton, Utah. He received his Bachelor Degree in Broadcast Communications from Weber State University and his Master of Science in International Relations from Utah State University. He has an extensive background in political violence and revolution, or what today is called terrorism. He also served an LDS mission in England and Wales. Bennion has spent the past 25 years in journalism working as a reporter, producer, news director and general manager at stations in Texas and Utah. As a television journalist, he has interviewed many dignitaries, including presidential hopefuls and corporate presidents, but his favorite all time interview was with the Civil Rights heroine, Rosa Parks. Bennion has taught college courses at several universities across th e valley. While teaching at Salt Lake Community College, Bennion developed a broadcasting program for Spanish-speaking students. In addition to this, Bennion was a faculty advisor for Operation Smile at Utah Valley State College. In 2000 and 2002, Bennion took a break from television to run for the Utah State Senate. In both campaigns, he focused on improving public education and removing the sales tax from food. He also served as the advisor for the Riverton Youth Council. In 2007, he helped his long time friend and associate Dick Nourse establish the Dick Nourse Center for Mass Communications and Journalism at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah. Bennion and his wife Malinda, live in Riverton, Utah; they have four children, and five grandchildren.

Why I'm Running?
I'm running for congress because we as Americans are feeling the problems of the last eight years and what I consider the worst stewardship of the American economy. During the 2000 presidential campaign, then Governor Bush and Vice President Gore debated on how to spend an anticipated 2.2 trillion dollar surplus. This campaign will not be about the misrepresentation of the past, but about the future and about what we as Democrats can do differently. "Cowboy" Ted's Letter to the Residents of Kane County - Uranium issue still leaves unanswered health questions

The controversy surrounding the Uranium mining operation on the Arizona Strip and the request by Coconino County and the state of Arizona to cease Uranium exploration has left a number of unanswered health questions. The issue of protecting the Grand Canyon as a recreation area is fine, but what about health issues that have surrounded the Uranium industry for years. Have we forgotten about the down winders tragedy of only 50 years ago?

As a parent of small children, I have a number of questions about this Uranium mining operation and I encourage other parents to ask questions related to the safety of your kids. Tuba City, Monticello and Moab have a host of health problems and one thing in common - Uranium.

We also have pretty conclusive evidence that there is radioactive material in the soil from the nuclear tests in Nevada in the 50's.
I question the logic in supporting an industry that will bring limited economic benefit to the area with a number of health concerns still up in the air.
I also question the logic of digging up Uranium and disturbing radioactive soil downwind of Kanab and Kane County with the history of down winder Cancer cases in our area.

It is a known fact and has been verified by health insurance providers, that Kane County has higher incidence of Cancer than the rest of Utah. The Uranium companies have said there are no more health risks to our residents than any other part of the country. I believe we need expert opinion from health professionals that are unaffiliated with the mining companies before we continue to support the Uranium mining efforts of our neighbors to the south.

True, the mining will take place in Arizona and there are no mining claims in Kane County, according to the mining folks, but we should be concerned about the health of folks in Kane County. Nevada is also a bordering state and their actions led to health issues and we collectively supported the discontinuation of the Divine Strake testing. Why is this issue on the Arizona Strip and its effects on Kane County and residents of Utah any different than the Divine Strake tests?

I suggest we require a lot more conclusive information about health risks to our kids before we provide our support to the Uranium mining activity in our region.
