And just who is doing the gouging anyway? Big Oil? China? India? OPEC? The weak dollar? The American consumer for not buying more fuel efficient cars?

With regards to oil, we've been living on borrowed time for way too long. Go ahead and blame Bush, but this situation has been years in the making.
What you're seeing is the market at work. Yes, the dreaded capitalist market that liberals need to protect us from.
Fortunately the market is already correcting itself just as it did in the 1980s. Consumption is already starting to drop, and it will accelerate. This time around, the price stayed too high for too long. Of course, by the time this takes effect, President Obama will be able to claim credit for it.

What we are all suffering from is Democrat Extremists that block increases in domestic supply and more refining capability.
By the way, the point on premium: If you want to complain about gas prices, don't buy the most expensive grade. But, thanks to the free market, Rob can buy any gas he wishes....what a great country!
Our Toyota Avalon ran better on premium too or at least the middle grade.
A couple months back while sipping jasmine tea at one of my favorite Chinese restaurants the leaves indicated it was the right time to buy a Toyota Prius. So we did. It runs on regular, got 53 mpg driving it to Monticello UT and back to Centerville. In addition we got a $2k rebate from Toyota, (they are gone now), and a $3K tax credit from our federal government. We feel disappointed around town when the computer tells us we are getting less than 50 mpg. The local guys in Bountiful would not do any deals so we drove to Ogden and got a sweet one where there were many Prius cars on their lot. Won't mention any names but it was on Riverdale Road.
The tea leaves also said Obama would be our next president and the Democrats would win big across the land and in Utah!
I have read the Republicans tend not to buy the Prius. Wonder why? Still hoping that gas may come down in price to fuel their Hummers?

It appears the only debate that you deem "truthy" is that which with you agree. Otherwise, you deem opposing views as being rash, belittling, and annoying.
It really makes me smile that your comment says: "just to fan the flames." And then you proceed, in your post, to criticize that "People are picking fights because we live in a society whose credo is ye who shoutith the loudest wins." I don't think the calm debate you advocate comes from fanning the flames.
Regardless, impassioned debate is the hallmark of great societies (please note the anti-federalist papers) like the US. I believe Rob owes much of the success of this blog to allowing, even encouraging the open expression of various ideas. Trying to quell this debate through pious intellectualism might, at first, appear noble, but is actually just a fancier way of trying to quiet an opponent without having to muddy yourself in the facts. Like the fact that hyperbole is a forbidden fruit consumed on both sides of the aisle.
Because you fail to include liberal examples of agressive rhetoric as well as stirring the pot yourself, your noble assertions ring intellectually hollow. You just don't seem to pass the "truthiness" test.

Gasoline prices will continue to increase, and every other product will increase in price because of it.
