Rep. Carl Duckworth health update

SALT LAKE CITY - January 14, 2008 - Representative Carl Duckworth (D), has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called multiple myeloma, it was announced today by House Minority Leader, Brad King. Duckworth has served the citizens of Magna, West Valley City, and Kearns, District 22, in the Utah Legislature since 1999.

Duckworth is currently receiving and responding favorably to treatment. He and his doctors fully expect him to return in January for the regular session.

“The outpouring of concern and support from Representative Duckworth’s constituents, family & friends has been touching and inspiring. We look forward to his return,” said Brad King.

Multiple Myeloma is a rare type of cancer in the bone marrow where cancerous cells called plasma cells manufacture too much protein. The treatments are not simple or easy but they are effective at controlling the disease, according to Duckworth’s physician. Patients with the disease may require a bone marrow transplant if the response to therapy is positive.

"My wife Sue and I would like to thank everyone for their love, prayers, and concern," said Duckworth.
