“Happy Days” Take Root at New Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office

Mayor-elect Becker To Plant Sweetgum ‘Happidaze’ Tree to Commemorate Inauguration

Salt Lake City - After taking the oath of office as Salt Lake City’s new executive leader today, Mayor-elect Ralph Becker will plant a tree on the southwest corner of Washington Square at 2:30 p.m. The tree planting ceremony signifies the Mayor’s commitment to the natural environment and illustrates one of the initiatives Becker put forth in his campaign for Mayor.

In his 180-Day Plan, Mayor Becker pledged to initiate a citywide tree preservation and planting program. “As a city government, we must encourage all our residents to accelerate our efforts,” said Mayor Becker. “Planting trees throughout the city will reduce air pollution and enhance our community.”

An urban forest helps to offset climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen. Trees also reduce energy use by providing shade and lowering air temperatures.

Becker will encourage residents and businesses to meet the goal of doubling the tree canopy throughout the county. His efforts support the “One Million Trees for One Million People” tree planting initiative recently organized by Salt Lake County. The initiative aims to boost the county’s community forest by one million trees in the next ten years.

Mayor Becker will plant the Sweetgum ‘Happidaze’ tree on the grounds below his new office. Participants in the ceremony will include Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, representatives from Tree Utah, Salt Lake City Urban Forrester Bill Rutherford, and 3rd and 4th grade students from the Open Classroom Charter School.

I certainly hope they dug the hole for the tree in the fall and suitably insulated it, otherwise that poor tree is never going to make it.
