Imus in the Nightside: Utah AG Shurtleff refers to women as "Ho"

Salt Lake City, UT
After teasing a segment on KSL's Nightside how to take your "chick" to a chick-flick a caller called in and asked Attorney General Mark Shurtleff:

Caller: "Why do you call women chicks?"

Shurtleff: "What am I supposed to call them? Ho--?"

then he stopped.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Sorry, man. I was there.

This post is bullshit.

I've been blogging for a long time, and this is very bad.

I think you should AT LEAST change the title.

I'm a chick. My boyfriend is allowed to take "his chick" to a "chick flick". Not all women are chicks, and if they're the kind of woman who gets her panties in a bunch over calling her a chick, then don't. I don't often agree with Shurtleff, but really - what's he supposed to call a woman who he's taking to a chick flick?

I can't stand political correctness for the sake of political correctness.

why do we get so hung up on this type of thing?

i've made this argument in the past and i'll make it again: the context of the language always needs to be considered.

now calling a chick flick a chick flick is derogatory? i often call my best friend "ho." it's a term of endearment between us pals, nothing rude.

they are just words. they can only hurt us if we let them. lighten up.

p.s. you misspelled "shurtleff" in the title...

and why is this clip so dang long? give us the good stuff, not the whole freaking show.

sheesh.

You're supposed to call them women, or ladies.

I don't think the AG meant any disrespect, but he did say, "what am I supposed to call them, Ho?"

Yeah Ethan--you WERE there--yukin it up in the background. There is laughing in the background when he said Ho. Was that you?

Oh yeah, it was one big "women are hos" party.

Look, no one loves digging at the politicians more than me.

But this is pretending to be offended by something that wasn't even said.

There's plenty to criticize the Attorney General about without completely fabricating headlines.

Get a life.

Typical extremist hypersensitivity.

Completely fabricated offense.

When someone says "what am I supposed to call them, Ho?" it's pretty obvious they don't approve of the word ho otherwise they would not have asked the question.

I guess we can't use the term chick flick anymore, and forget about even coming up with a suitable replacement (except for maybe "womyn movies" since this acknowledges that some movies may be targeted towards women

Gloria Steinem recently wrote a piece on Huffington Post about the term "chick flicks" : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gloria-steinem/a-modest-proposal_b_55772.html

I'm not offended by the term "chick flick" myself, but I also like her suggestiong to call the opposite type of film "prick flicks"

Ethan:
What part of "what was I supposed to call them? Ho--?" "wasn't even said"?

Is it much different if the dialog was:

Caller: Why do you call women chicks?

Shurtleff: What was I supposed to call them Whores?

(Ethan: Yuk Yuk.)

Not much difference.

It is funny that you are supposed to be Utah's most feared blogger--unless something embarrassing happens on your beloved Nightside. You are taking such a self-interested position. You have no credibility on this post.

BTW--so how should the headline read? Leave nightside off? Then is it okay?

I listened to the spot this morning, and then had my wife and some co-workers listen to the spot.

My wife said the comment was gross (she had no idea who was speaking). She thought it implied some disrespect for women. When I asked her if it was an "IMUS Moment", she laughed and said not even close.

My co-workers chuckled, and then said that it wasn't the smartest thing to say on the air, but also admitted that they wouldn't hold the comment against the AG, as they felt that the AG wasn't trying to be disrespectful.

What do I think? It's time for lunch.

I agree with ethan, jess, rob, et al. And I'm not sure the point of this post. I don't think the AG was trying to be disrespectful.
