Obama supporters on Romney's Street

This past week I was looking for Obama signs for a lady that lives on Mitt Romney's street since the president's fundraiser was there on Wednesday. Well, we were able to get her some and about a dozen of her neighbors greeted the motorcade and attendees with them.

She says that Senator Orrin Hatch stopped. He was friendly and asked if they were really going to support Obama. She said, "Oh, yes, 100%". They also got the thumbs up from about three secret servicemen and friendly responses from other attendees. The atmosphere was more like a sports rivalry than angry, bitter disagreement that so often happens between people from different ends of the political spectrum.

I'm so glad it worked out this way and that we have cool Obama supporters living on Romney's street!

Regards,
Nikki Norton

Is Scott McClellan a 'miserable creature'

There's been a lot of hype this week about the release of former Bush White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's book "What Happened". Republicans are understandably angry, with the most vitriolic comments (like the one in the title) coming from Bob Dole. Critics have a point when they say McClellan's going to make a bundle of money from the book. The "liberal press" has been critical of his criticism of them for being wimps on the run-up to the Iraq War.

But (as usual) the media hype is obscuring the larger message of the book. McClellan is not as much critical of Bush Administration officials as he is of the current culture in Washington that turns government into an endless political campaign. His blame of that culture for the serious errors of the Bush Administration, which all but the most partisan Republicans admit, carries the ring of truth. Sounding the alarm about where that culture is taking this nation is the point of the book, a criticism that applies equally to both political parties. One thing that is clear is McClellan's frustration that he believed in candidate Bush's promise to bring that culture to an end in 2000, and saw it taken to new heights under the guidance of Cheney, Rowe & Co.

Given the real message of the book, it's clear why he is attracted to Senator Obama's message (click on link above). Of all the presidential candidates from both parties, Barack Obama was (and still is) the only one that seems to be serious about moving us in a new direction.

I hope when the hype dies down that the American people and their leaders can learn something from the reflections of a man who was himself caught up in the permanent campaign culture - and decided he didn't like what he found there.

Gas Gouge Quandary?

A friend of mine commented yesterday on an old photo I had posted to my Facebook site shortly after my visit to New Mexico on April 14th, 2007. His comment really got me thinking about the dire affect of gas prices on everyday hard working Americans.
In light of President Bush visiting Utah over the last 24 hours please consider the Gas Gouge Quandary. Three C3 planes, carrying 5 Marine One helicopters and One Air Force One plane all to attend a 30 to 70 thousand dollar per person high donor McCain fundraiser at Mitt Romney's Park City Utah home. "Priceless."
Is this an example of U.S. Tax Payer dollars spent well? Is it ethical to have any U.S. President use tax dollars to spend on partisan fundraising while still in office? Did Bush have to tap into the Federal Oil Reserves for this trip?

From the Fraud Files blog: More interesting Mark Shurtleff News

By Tracy Coenen

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff keeps providing interesting material for bloggers. Two weeks ago I wrote about the campaign contributions Shurtleff receives from multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) like Usana Health Sciences (NASDAQ:USNA) and Pre-Paid Legal (NYSE:PPD), and his support for weakening laws against pyramid schemes in Utah. This is important because it is my contention that most MLMs are pyramid schemes in disguise, and that the government can and should enforce anti-pyramiding laws against them.

And of course, there was the whole situation in which Shurtleff lied about Sam Antar. Sam’s a convicted felon who travels around the country (on his own dime) educating accountants, investigators, and lawyers about corporate fraud from the perspective of a reformed criminal. He does this simply as a public service.

Shurtleff falsely accused Sam of using his speaking engagement in Utah for the Attorney General’s office as a self-promotional tool. (Sam did no such thing. All he did was mention on his blog that he did the engagement and list it on his website, as he does with all speaking engagements.)

That whole situation reeked of Shurtleff attempting to help Overstock.com (NASDAQ:OSTK) silence a vocal critic of the company’s perpetual money-losing machine. Overstock has donated at least $11,000 to Shurtleff’s campaign since 2001.

And now Shurtleff is in the middle of case in which Marc Sessions Jenson was accused of fraud and racketeering. It’s alleged that Shurtleff had charges brought against Jenson as a favor to a political donor, Ricke White. White says Jenson defrauded him of a million dollars with an investment scheme. Shurtleff says that he isn’t involved, and all decisions in the case were made by his staff.

Everyone is fighting over who is influencing who. Which lobbyists are twisting which arms. Who’s intimidating who. And so on… But I just find it interesting that Shurtleff finds himself in the middle of another case involving donors and questions about his ethics and conduct.

Another interesting tidbit I found while researching this situation? Unusual deletions from Mark Shurtleff’s online campaign contribution data. Utah’s site which details all campaign contribution information is currently offline, supposedly for an overhaul. But prior to this, the Salt Lake Tribune noticed that records were being altered.

One such record? Shurtleff’s contribution to John McCain’s campaign. Why was it altered? The Deseret News reported earlier this month that the donation might have violated federal election laws. Shortly thereafter, the entry in the database went missing.

Then a second Shurtleff entry also went missing after he was questioned about it. This one involved a contribution to the Scott Rolle campaign for Maryland’s attorney general. Right after The Deseret News asked about that one, it went missing as well.

The Fraud Files Blog's Tracy Coenen

On May 15, 2008 I linked a post from the Fraud Files Blog by Tracy Coenen titled Supporting pyramid schemes is lucrative for politicians where Tracy pointed out that Utah's current Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has received $110,000.00 in campaign contributions since 2003 from Pre-Paid legal.

Since the next post on The Utah Amicus will actually be a post stolen (with permission) from the Fraud Files Blog I thought you should know a little more about the author.

From the Fraud File Blog:

Tracy Coenen is a forensic accountant and fraud examiner who investigates white collar crimes, including cases of financial statement fraud, embezzlement, tax fraud, and insurance fraud. She is the author of Essentials of Corporate Fraud and more than 100 articles on fraud featured in industry publications.

Tracy has personally investigated hundreds of frauds in a wide variety of industries, including cases of embezzlement, financial statement fraud, investment fraud, and insurance fraud. She has served as an expert witness in numerous cases in state and federal courts involving damage calculations, commercial contract disputes, shareholder disputes and criminal defense.

She is not only a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), but also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). The CFE designation is the "gold standard" for those involved in financial investigations and fraud analysis. As an expert witness, Tracy continuously demonstrates her expertise, not only on paper, but also in the courtroom. She is a skilled witness who connects with judges and juries to help them understand complex financial matters.

Tracy is the 2007 winner of the prestigious Hubbard Award, given by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The 40,000 worldwide members of ACFE voted for the best article from the 2006 issues of Fraud Magazine, and selected Tracy's article Financial Statement Fraud in the Katrina Aftermath: A Whirlwind of Opportunities as the winner.

Tracy wrote Essentials of Corporate Fraud, a book that offers executives, attorneys, and auditors a chance to benefit from Tracy's real-world experience as a fraud examiner and financial investigator.

Read more about Tracy's qualifications here.

BTW, Tracy is a registered Republican and the reason I'm sharing this fact is just in case someone tries to accuse her of being a Democratic partisan who is politicizing her opinion to promote the "Liberal Agenda."

Springmeyer offers plan to help new homeowners, housing industry

SALT LAKE CITY - Bob Springmeyer, the “good jobs, good education, good health” candidate for governor, called today for creation of a Perpetual Homestead Fund to meet the needs of Utahns faced with soaring housing costs.

“Utah is beginning to feel the pinch of the economic downturn affecting most other states in the country,” said Springmeyer, citing recent figures that show a decline in the growth of Utah jobs for the ninth month in a row. “Young families with dreams of owning their first homes, laid-off construction workers, and single mothers so far have been among the hardest hit.

“We cannot wait for the worst. It’s time to tap our state’s Rainy Day Fund to give them a bit of shelter from the storm.”

Springmeyer is proposing using up to $10 million from the fund be made available to the Utah Housing Corporation to expand the amount of down-payment assistance first time homebuyers can receive, and called for local governments to match that amount. Homebuyers could then use this money to help them qualify for home loan financing.

“I challenge Gov. Huntsman and leaders of local governments around the state to work with business and civic groups to adopt bold programs, such as the one I propose, that address the housing needs of those hit hardest by a weakening economy,” said Springmeyer.

“Many young families just don’t understand that they can qualify to buy homes and invest in our community” said Springmeyer. “Even a family with an income up to $70,500 can qualify for this excellent example of a Public/Private Partnership.”

Springmeyer has operated his own management consulting business for 30 years. The company, Bonneville Research, specializes in strategic planning and economic development. Springmeyer was born in Provo and raised in Ogden and Sugarhouse. He attended the University of Utah where he earned degrees in economics and political science.

Springmeyer has a long record of working to make Utah communities better places to live. At the recent State Democratic Convention, Springmeyer was nominated to be his party’s standard bearer by 88 percent of the vote. Josie Valdez was nominated to run as his lieutenant governor.

Long-time TV newsman endorses Spencer for Utah’s Congressional District 3

Dick Nourse, the dean of broadcast journalism in Utah, shed his reporter’s neutrality recently and endorsed Bennion Spencer for Congress.

Nourse, who recently retired after a long career with KSL-TV, cited Spencer’s journalism background and their long-standing friendship as key reasons: “He is trained to deal with the truth and the facts,” Nourse said. “Gas prices are destroying family budgets. The middle class is being squeezed out of existence. Our schools are overcrowded. Our borders are like sieves. And after billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, all we know about homeland security is that at airports you have to take your shoes off and throw away your toothpaste. All of these are issues … [important to] my friend Bennion Spencer.”

Nourse said Spencer is especially concerned with supporting our veterans. He would work to ensure our troops have adequate protection on the battlefield, that they receive the best medical care, and never have to worry whether their families will receive help in a crisis.

“(Bennion) will spend what it takes to replace our national disgrace with benefits that truly honor our soldiers, our veterans and their families,” Nourse said.

Spencer has a 25-year background in journalism, including managing local television stations and teaching at the college level. He and his family live in Riverton.

The Democratic Party of Utah elected Spencer on May 10 to be its candidate for the 3rd Congressional District. He will run against the Republican winner of a June 24 primary, either incumbent Chris Cannon or Jason Chaffetz.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker Appoints Long Time Downtown Leader to Economic Development Post

Robert Farrington to Lead Salt Lake City’s Economic Development Efforts

SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker announced today the appointment of Robert Farrington to the post of Economic Development Director for Salt Lake City. Since 1992, Farrington has been an instrumental leader in the economic development of downtown Salt Lake City through his role as the Executive Director of the Downtown Alliance.

In making the announcement, Becker said, “Today marks the beginning of a bright future, not only for our City, but for the state and region. Regions prosper with a strong core. Salt Lake City can and must be THE regional leader for economic development in the Intermountain West. Our Capital City truly can emerge as a Great American City through Bob’s visionary and effective economic leadership.”

Becker characterized the decision to hire an effective, knowledgeable Economic Development Director as vital to the economic success of Salt Lake City and the Intermountain Region. “Nobody in the state is more qualified to provide that leadership as Director of Salt Lake City’s Economic Development Department than Bob Farrington,” said Becker.

During Farrington’s tenure at the Downtown Alliance, Salt Lake City saw record- setting growth and development, with the addition of over $2.5 billion in public and private investment, and many other significant new public and private development initiatives underway.

Farrington has served as chairman of the cabinet of “Downtown Rising”, a major community visioning effort for Downtown Salt Lake City, and helped lead the efforts generating support for Trax, Salt Lake’s new light rail system.

Speaking of Farrington’s vast experience, Becker remarked, “As we see our "Downtown Rising," with unprecedented investment and development, we will need Bob’s qualifications and experience to guide us through the next five years.”

Citing Farrington as someone who sees the big picture and the potential of Salt Lake City as a regional economic center, Becker has asked Farrington, within his first 90 days on the job, to meet with economic development directors from all of the major cities and counties, as well as the state and to formulate guiding principles of regional economic development for the Capital City.

Becker concluded, “I am pleased that Bob has agreed to accept this momentous task. He shares my belief that economic development is in every City employee’s job description. I look forward to helping our business community by supporting the work Bob will do throughout the City, both internally and externally to facilitate practices that will enable businesses to thrive in our Capital City.”

    Robert Farrington Bio

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker announced today that Robert F. Farrington, Jr. has been selected to serve as the Senior Director of Economic Development for the Mayor’s Office.

Farrington was the first Executive Director of the Downtown Alliance of Salt Lake City—a position he has held since 1992. He served as Chairman of the Cabinet of Downtown Rising, a major community visioning effort for Downtown Salt Lake City, and helped lead the efforts generating support for TRAX.

In addition to major economic and community development initiatives, Farrington has been instrumental in creating major new events and festivals in Salt Lake City. These new community institutions include the Downtown Farmers Market First Night Salt Lake, Lights On!, Downtown Alliance Achievement Awards, Live Green, and Downtown Dine O’Round. Farrington was significantly involved in the successful hosting of the 2002 Winter Olympics in downtown Salt Lake City—a milestone in a progressive decade.

Farrington was one of the founders, and the first Executive Director, of the San Antonio Downtown Alliance. He has consulted with numerous communities around the nation in creating downtown organizations and business improvement districts.

Prior to joining the Salt Lake City Downtown Alliance, he was a partner in Admiralty Management Company—a real estate planning and project management firm. He has worked extensively in urban economic development and international trade, heading up those efforts for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

Farrington was awarded a Master of Science degree in Urban Planning and Environmental Management from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Houston. He has received national recognition for planning and urban development projects from the International Downtown Association, American Planning Association, and the National Defense Transportation Institute.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and has been an adjunct professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the University of Utah for the past ten years. He serves on the Boards of the Salt Lake Chamber, Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other community organizations.

Statement of Support Mayor Ralph Becker Scores Big for Economic Development
    May 21, 2008

The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest business association, commends Mayor Ralph Becker for selecting “one of our own,” Bob Farrington, to lead city economic development efforts. Bob brings in-depth experience, critical knowledge, superb problem-solving skills, and business know-how to City Hall. We congratulate Bob, enthusiastically support the mayor’s selection, and pledge our support to help Salt Lake City and the entire region thrive.

Bob has served as the Executive Director of the Downtown Alliance of Salt Lake City for the better part of 16 years. During this time, he established the Downtown Farmers Market – one of the largest in the west, launched First Night – Salt Lake City’s New Year’s celebration, and helped lead Downtown Rising – a regional movement to enhance Utah’s capital city. His economic development leadership has contributed to Salt Lake City’s current resurgence, where over $2.5 billion will be invested in the city core during the next five years. He has also demonstrated his ability to lead as Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, introduced TRAX light rail to the city core, developed the Gateway area, and a host of other dramatic changes. We know that our entire regional economy will be enhanced as Bob devotes his considerable talent to building what Mayor Becker has aptly called a “Great American City.”

As a statewide Chamber and Utah’s business leader, we work tirelessly to foster a vital business climate and strong economy. We know that region’s prosper with a strong central city – one that is filled with people, teaming with energy, and full of great attractions. That is why we sponsored Downtown Rising, a 40-year vision for Utah’s capital city.

We enthusiastically support Mayor Becker’s desire to grow the entire regional economy through effective and visionary capital city leadership that is consistent with Downtown Rising, we know that Bob will successfully implement the mayor’s vision, and we will do our part to create a city that is, as we like to say, “on the rise.”

Not a superdelegate, state Dem blogger still convention-bound
    The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 05/18/2008 12:37:44 AM MDT

If Rob Miller were a woman, he would be a superdelegate wielding tremendous clout in the long and contested Democratic nomination fight.

But the Democratic National Committee has a gender balance rule. So Miller, the vice chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, got bumped in favor of former state Sen. Karen Hale.

Don't feel too bad for Miller just yet. He may not be able to cast his vote in the historic convention, but he will still be there.

ELATES: The Utah Amicus is off to Denver!

I was sitting in a meeting Wednesday morning when I received the following letter on my Blackberry...

    Rob -

In about an hour, we’ll announce the blogs selected for the State Blogger Corps at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Congratulations. I’m writing to let you know that The Utah Amicus will be the credentialed blog from Utah.

The DNCC staff is ready to welcome you to Denver in August. We know that you’ll be the eyes and ears of a large audience back home. As we’ve said, members of the State Blogger Corps will be seated alongside their delegations at the Convention. You’ll literally have one of the best seats in the house. And we expect that you’ll share that up-front view with your online community of readers and other bloggers. Together, we’ll make sure this Democratic Convention is seen and experienced online in more ways than ever before.

Let’s start with some content you can post on your own blog. Howard Dean was in Denver yesterday and he recorded a video message introducing the State Blogger corps - your blog specifically. Upload the video to YouTube or whatever your preferred video service may be. You can download the raw QuickTime file here:
    http://www.demconvention.com/bloggercorps/blog-announce-ut.mov

We know you probably have lots of questions about Convention logistics. Hotel rooms? Travel? Workspace in the Pepsi Center? We’ll be in touch very shortly with helpful information. And we’ll probably have a few more questions for you. The Convention staff here in Denver will guide you through the details – so keep an eye out for our e-mails and calls.

We hope you’ll share today’s news with your readers. For now, it’s exclusively yours. We’ll be publicizing your blog’s name and URL in a press release later this morning – and that will be your first opportunity to see the full list of credentialed state blogs. (We’ll announce the list of additional credentialed blogs, the General Blogger Pool, before the end of the month.)

    Once again, congrats!

    -aaron

    Aaron Myers
    Director of Online Communications

I jumped out of my chair, hopped up and down, and then realized that everyone in the room was staring at me. You can bet that I felt a bit foolish but what the hell, I was going to the 2008 Democratic National Convention and I was elated!

I don't know if words can explain how grateful I am to have this opportunity to be eyes and ears of the Utah blogosphere in Denver, and I need to thank Howard Dean, The DNC, the DNCC Credentialing Committee, Aaron Meyers and his staff, and all those involved in putting this opportunity together.

Most importantly, I need to thank our readers and our contributors for making The Utah Amicus the first blog in history from Utah to receive a credential to the Democratic National Convention.

    With every best wish,

    The Utah Amicus

PS, and thank you J.M. Bell for getting Rob'bed

    J. M. Bell Says,

So, nothing yet on your blog about the DNCC stuff? C'mon, brag already!

Serious congrats, by the way (surrounded in envy, I might add).

From The Fraud Files Blog: Supporting pyramid schemes is lucrative for politicians

    By Tracy Coenen

As Barry Minkow (Fraud Discovery Institute), Dr. Jon Taylor, Robert FitzPatrick, Eric Scheibeler and others (including me) continue the unpopular fight against multi-level marketing companies (which are nothing more than disguised pyramid schemes), I occasionally come across items of interest…

Like this one. Did you know that Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Pre-Paid Legal Services (NYSE:PPD)? He has.

    From Utah’s website:

All Contributions for Shurtleff, Mark Leonard

$110,000 in campaign contributions just since 2003 is a nice little chunk of money, I think.

From KCPW: Strong Turnout at Convention Makes Dems Hopeful for Change

(KCPW News) Utah Democrats think this is the year to add some blue to what is perhaps the reddest state in the nation. This weekend's convention was abuzz with excitement over the presidential election. State party leaders say this energy will invigorate voters - including some Republicans - to elect Democrats to state and local offices. KCPW's Elizabeth Ziegler went to the convention Saturday and files this report:

From KSL.COM: Republicans and Democrats are gearing up for state races

    Richard Piatt reporting

The shape of Utah's political season is starting to emerge. Saturday's state party conventions selected the candidates who will run in the primary election and beyond. One of the most-watched races so far is Rep. Chris Cannon's fight to keep his place in Congress.

Jason Chaffetz may not be a name you know as well as you do Chris Cannon, but Chaffetz wants to change that. He's offering Cannon one of the most serious political challenges he's ever faced.

Dan Jones The fact that Chaffetz came within nine delegate votes of outright eliminating Cannon is a sign. Cannon knows it too. He knows taxpayers are discontented and disenchanted with politics and he may become part of a tidal wave demanding change.

"I think it's a little bit deeper this time. He's got the greatest challenge of his career," said Utah political pollster Dan Jones.

Saturday, both Chaffetz and Cannon agreed on many things. They did not, however, agree on whether Cannon's incumbency is a liability or an asset.

Money-wise, it's an asset; otherwise, it may or may not be. "Voters are absolutely fed up with what's going on in Washington, D.C., and what their representatives are doing and not doing. And I've been a message for change, change for the better," Chaffetz said.

Cannon said, "I think people are going to look at, see what needs to be done, what are our values in Utah? And I would let the people in Utah make that decision."

The two have six weeks to campaign before the primary. The winner will face Democrat Bennion Spencer in the fall.

That race, and an overall quest for change, has Utah Democrats hopeful this year, especially in legislative races. "[Almost] All Utahns are starting to recognize that we were better off when we were a little bit more purple. I think you're going to see the end to the supermajority up here in the House and Senate," said Rob Miller, with the Utah Democratic Party.

Today, Democrat Josie Valdez filed as running mate to gubernatorial candidate Bob Springmeyer. As a Latina candidate, a word she says she likes, she's hoping to spark a lot of support. "There is a huge population there that has been untapped, and I want to generate excitement there," she said.

So, jumping ahead, is this the year for Democrats in the 3rd District? There, a lot of people who are active in politics are asking for a more conservative voice now, but what counts is who shows up in the voting booths in November.

    We Stand United

    Salt Lake Tribune:
Utah Democrats chose the "good jobs, good education, good health" candidate Bob Springmeyer as their candidate to run against Republican Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.

Before Springmeyer was nominated Saturday with nearly 87 percent of the delegate vote, he made a surprise nomination of Josie Valdez for lieutenant governor.

"We're in this to win," Springmeyer said, pointing to "all the energy of the new people" attending the convention this year.

He sees winning the governorship as "a simple numbers game." He says 39 percent of Utahns consistently vote Democratic while 41 percent vote Republican.

"The math is easy. If we can get 12 to 15 percent, we'll win," said Springmeyer, president of economic management consultant firm Bonneville Research.

Valdez's nomination was welcomed with a standing ovation and cheers from the crowd packed into the South Ballroom of the Cal Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center. "My task is to help unite and grow the party and see victory in November," Valdez said. "We stand united and united we shall win."
12 to 15 percent are not bad numbers, especially when you see numbers like this for the incumbent.

As part of my website as a State Senate candidate, I've created a "Utah Education Blog" to gather ideas about our public education system and brainstorm ideas for improvement. The plan is this: I'm going to write a new blog every couple of weeks on a particular subject, and then collect the responses. This is partially for my own education (no pun intended), and partially to act as a starting point for advocating education policy when I'm elected. When I write these, I'm going to link to Utah Amicus to get input from my friends at this site.

Topic: “Don’t Fall Prey to Meth”

Methamphetamine ("meth") use affects more than just the person using the drug. It literally impacts the lives of all Utah citizens; users, spouses, siblings, parents, grandparents, children, friends, neighbors, educators, businesses - indeed, entire communities. The drug possesses an insidious ability to strike in unexpected places. In fact, the face of meth addiction is most often that of a woman, often with young children. Meth use in Utah has devastating effects for families and communities. We'll explore some prevention and intervention strategies that may help people not fall prey to meth.

Guest Speaker: Mike Cottam is a retired public educator with experience as a counselor and prevention specialist. As an educator, he was honored with the U. S. Department of Education recognition for outstanding achievement in Drug and Alcohol education, the Alpine Excellence in Teaching award and the Utah State PTA Friend of Children award.

Mike is a member of the Utah National Guard and recently received the prestigious Utah National Guard Minuteman Award for 40 years of outstanding service to his country.
